Kolbäcks hostelry is at Herrevad, right beside the Kolbäck river. This is a prehistoric shallow site at a location suitable for crossing the river. Its history began when Birger Jarl fought a battle here with local clans in 1251.
Hostelries in Sweden date back a long way, to 1279. In that year Magnus Ladulås, through the Alsnö regulations, forbade the practice of forcing countryfolk to provide accommodation and hospitality. On 31 August 1561 King Erik XIV issued a declaration concerning organisation for hostelries and stabling. This is the real beginning of Kolbäcks Inn.
The first known document concerning the inn is dated 1670 when Henrik Mattson ran “Kohlbäcks Krougâ€. This was a strategic location beside a country road and Herrevad’s bridge and has always been the reason for the hostelry.
During the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries many of history’s powerful and cultural personalities have stopped here on their journeys through Sweden. These include the musician Carl-Michael Bellman who stayed here on his way from Stockholm to see King Gustav III at Kungsör Manor House. Another famous guest was the poet Erik Gustaf Geijer.
Many innkeepers have followed each other here over the centuries. The most recent are Jarmo and Marianne Koskela who have run the inn since 2005.
