Crane Safari – a magnificent experience
During the autumn cranes gather in Svartådalen; during the day they land in huge flocks in the cultivated fields of the area. We watch the colour-ringed cranes and think of their thrilling journeys between Spain and Sweden. At dusk flocks of several hundred cranes fly to their sleeping quarters on the lake, often passing directly overhead. The high point of the evening comes as darkness falls and we stand by the fading embers of a fire, listening to the cranes calling each other.
A truly magical moment. When, How and for Whom?
Common cranes gather in Svartådalen from 25 August to 25 September. A Crane Safari normally starts at 15.00 and ends at 21.00 but can be arranged to suit your wishes. This Safari is suitable for anyone with a general interest in nature or for dedicated ornithologists. It is also great for photographers. No previous knowledge is required. What is the Land like? We travel across Svartådalens open farmland and at dusk we await the cranes by the lakeside or at the forest wetland.? What Animals are there??We often see Elk, Red Foxes and Roe deer in the daytime. What Birds are there? The White-tailed Eagle and several other birds of prey are common during the autumn season in Svartådalen. Birds from the north of Sweden also make their way here during this time, such as the Hen Harrier, Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin, Peregrine or late lingering-breeds such as Bluethroat, Red-throated Pipit and Lapland Bunting. Crane Guarantee: If the cranes fail to appear for some reason (this happens only in extremely bad weather) we invite you to see the cranes on another occasion – free of charge.
